The Institute engages in the collecting, storing and providing of micro-organisms and promotes their use by industry. The visit to our facility will present to you view of a facility that stores as many as 40,000 micro-organisms and the vacuum driers in which these micro-organisms are preserved. If you are interested you will also be able to actually observe micro-organisms under the microscope. (Please understand that depending on our work conditions it may in certain circumstances not be possible to provide this opportunity.)
The NITE Biotechnology Headquarters uses three basic types of storage equipment to respond to the different preservation methods required for storing the different microbes. The first one is a cold store maintained at 4°C (with the entire room acting as if it were a refrigerator), the second one is an ultra-low temperature deep-freezer kept at -80°C, and the third one is a cryogenic liquefied nitrogen tank at -150°C
