Enjoy Colorful Autumn Foliage in Chiba

 

● Narita-san Park

 

From the fall to early in the winter the park becomes alive with people enjoying a colorful display of autumn foliage mirrored in the still waters of its ponds.  There are about 250 trees that put on beautiful autumnal tints such as maples, oaks (particularly, Quercus actissima and Quercus serrata) and ginkgo trees.

● Yoro Valley

 

With the spectacular fall foliage spreading across its Momijidani precipice, Yoro Valley is one of the most popular “leaf-peeping” spots.  Enjoy colorful autumn leaves as the path goes across various torrential points while trailing through the valley.

● Umegase Valley

 

The valley consists of 30- to 50-meter high eroded bluffs (geologically called “Umegase Strata”) on either bank of a 4- to 4.5-meter wide river.  Scenery beautifully changes season to season across the landscape, but the valley is particularly known as a scenic spot of beautiful autumn foliage, the best in all Chiba Prefecture.

● Kururi Castle

 

Many people visit Kukuri-jo or Kukuri Castle in the fall to enjoy scarlet-tinged leaves surrounding the castle.  Visitors can learn the local history in the archives built in the ruins of the ancient castle’s “ninomaru” (intermediate outworks) along with its restored “tenshukaku” (donjon).

● Tateyama Shiroyama Park

 

The park is located at the site of the ancient castle of the Satomi clan, the feudal lord family of the region, on the south hill of Tateyama.  The restored castle’s donjon (“tenshukaku”) commands a sweeping view of the whole town embracing the Bay of Tateyama called Kagamigaura.  With a Japanese style garden with a tea house, a walk called Man’yo-no-michi, peacock garden and other facilities, the park provides a place of recreation for the citizens.  It is also known as a place of cherry blossoms or sakura in addition to Japanese apricot blossoms or ume and azalea, with scenery change from season to season.

● Seiwa Kenmin-no-Mori Forest

 

Located almost at the center of Boso Peninsula, this forest zone was arranged to conserve the nature of the province and provide people of the prefecture with the opportunity to familiarize more with forests and commune with nature.


Access: 10 minutes’ walk from Mishima-ko Stop by bus for Kenmin-no-Mori & Ozaki (The bus starts from JR Uchibo Line Kisarazu Station.)

● Katori Shrine

 

A colorful display of fiery red, pumpkin orange and yellow of fall leaves of maples, oaks (particularly, Quercus actissima and Quercus serrata) and ginkgo trees, spread across the landscape, relaxes visitors.  A gorgeous carpet of fallen leaves on the approach to the shrine is really spectacular.

● Hondoji Temple

Visitors are relaxed with more than 1,500 tree leaves tinged with beautiful, fiery red.  It is the oldest temple in Chiba Prefecture and was designated as one of the nation’s important cultural properties, except its five-story pagoda which was constructed in 1991.

● Sakura Joshi Park (Sakura Castle Park)The park is located in the ruins of Sakurajo or Sakura Castle built by Toshikatsu Doi, a feudal lord, in 1610 and destroyed at the time of Meiji Restoration.
This historical park blessed with an abundance of greenery is loved by people also because of the spectacular autumn foliage of maples and ginkgo trees, spreading across its landscape.

● Kameyama Lake

Many visitors are impressed with Kameyama Lake’s brilliant reds of autumn leaves of maples and oaks (particularly, Quercus actissima).  Located almost at the center of Boso Peninsula, the lake is one of few sites in nature with clean air and covered with boundless expanse of rich green.
