Sogo Reido Sanctuary [Toshoji Temple]

This sanctuary was built in the memory of those killed in battle, when General Sakanoueno Tamuramaro suppressed a civil war in the Tohoku area during the era of Emperor Kammu (781-806 A.D.). About 350 years ago, Sogo (Sogoro Kiuchi) boldly made a plea to the Shogun to save farmers who were suffering from famine and oppressive taxation. Because direct appeals to the Shogun were prohibited at that time, Sogo and his children were crucified as punishment. The story of Sogo has become known nationwide - also as a play called “Self-Sacrificing Man Sakura Sogo.” Toshoji is Sogo’s family temple.
